What Makes Counseling with Alissa Unique

“We’re all just walking each other home.” ~ Ram Dass

No matter what inspires you to reach out for support, my approach is to focus on connection, in the therapeutic relationship as well as in your life as a whole. Dr. Brene Brown writes about connection “…as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” This type of connection is what forms my professional foundation, to be the person that lets you know that I see you and I walk with you.

There is tremendous power in connection. It opens the door to all kinds of previously unseen possibilities. When we are offered a respectful space, we can move through challenges in a beneficial way. Connection gives us time to reflect on what our struggles are trying to teach us, which is the key to growth and long-term positive change.

One of my core beliefs is that if we unravel something we perceive as a challenge all the way to its end, it will reveal deeper truths about our life as a whole. What I have seen is that this unraveling unfailingly leads us back to relationships. And then we can begin the transformative work of understanding what needs to be learned and/or healed about how we interact with ourselves and others.

It has been my honor to support individuals and families since 2003. My primary focus is to help families increase their ability to love each other in a way that makes them feel valued and respected as individuals. My work is rooted in attachment theory, which is how our early relationships have shaped the way we show up in our lives. I focus on relationships because this is either the currency or roadblock for every area of our life (parenting, partnership, work, friendship, health).

I am a LGBTQ friendly therapist located near Tacoma WA in Lakewood WA.
